Why small decisions matter

why small decisions matter

In today’s post, I’m going to write about why small decisions matter.

Every day, we make hundreds of decisions. While some of these choices may seem trivial, they all contribute to the creation of our life.

Small decisions matter because they determine the kind of life we live. If we want to live a fulfilling life, we should make choices that move us closer to our goals and dreams. Every choice we make matters, so we should always ask ourselves if it will help us achieve the life we want.

Our choices create our life; a life that is more or less fulfilling. The choices that we make either lead us towards a more fulfilling life or away from it. They either lead us towards a life that we love or away from it.

We are today where we are because of our choices

Wayne Dyer said that:

“Our lives are a sum total of the choices we have made.”

Basically, we are today where we are because of our choices – the big and small decisions that we’ve made.

Our choices create our habits

The choices we make each day may seem small, but they can have a big impact on our lives.

Over time, the accumulation of our daily decisions will determine the kind of life we live.

If we consistently make choices that lead us away from our goals and dreams, we will eventually find ourselves far from where we want to be. On the other hand, if we make choices that move us closer to our desired life, we will slowly but surely get there.

It might not seem like it at the time, but every choice we make matters. We may not always see the immediate results of our decisions, but over time they will add up to create the life we live. So when it comes to making decisions, big or small, we should always ask ourselves: will this choice lead me closer to the life I want to live? If not, it’s probably best to avoid it.

Of course, an individual small choice is not going to change our life, but it is the accumulation of our daily small decisions that create our lifestyle. It creates our habits, our character and our life.

For example, choosing a chocolate bar over an apple occasionally is not a big deal, but if we make this choice every day, it’s going to affect us. If one of your goals is to be fit, making this small decision every day is not going to get you there.

The choices we make are either getting us closer to our dream life or further away from it. It’s the repetition of these small decisions that create a habit. Choices that serve us, create good habits. And good habits are just as difficult to break as bad habits.

Would you like this behaviour to become a habit?

So when we make a choice, the question to ask ourselves is whether we would like this choice of action to become a habit. It’s a slippery slope. It’s easy to start a downwards spiral. It usually takes more effort to start an upward spiral as the benefits of the choices only often show themselves in the long term. Choosing immediate gratification is generally the easier option, but often not leading us to our goal.

Small steps can lead to great change. And this is why small decisions matter.

So what choices are you making today?

Are the choices you’re making today taking you closer to the life of your dreams or further away from it?

Every choice we make has an opportunity cost. When we make a choice, we are also choosing not to do something else. And every time we don’t do something, we can’t reap the rewards that come with it.

When we make a choice, let’s be mindful of what that choice is costing us. Is it worth it? What are the long-term consequences of this choice?

Making small, mindful decisions leads to a more fulfilling life than making careless decisions. So next time you’re about to make a choice, no matter how small, think about what that choice might be costing you.

It just might be the difference between a life you love and a life you tolerate.
